We are honoured to be featured in RBC’s “Pathways to Economic Prosperity, Reconciliation Action Plan” (pages 22-23) as a highlighted initiative that blends conservation, economic development, and Indigenous self-determination. First 30×30 Canada is a national initiative led by Nature for Justice in partnership with the IISAAK OLAM Foundation and Nature Focus Development. Together, we support Indigenous governments in stewarding their lands and waters through the creation of Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs), while also unlocking revenue streams through carbon markets and Nature-based Solutions (NbS).
Our program supports the Government of Canada’s 30×30 target, to conserve 30% of the country’s lands and waters by 2030. Unlike conventional models, First 30×30 Canada prioritizes equity retention within Indigenous communities and respects the principle of Free, Prior and Informed Consent at every stage.
RBC was the very first major investor to recognize the potential of this work. Through RBC Tech for Nature®, their initial funding of over USD$2 million is helping us to engage with more than 40 Indigenous governments across Canada and providing the foundation to bring in additional partners. This investment was not only financial, it was a powerful vote of confidence in Indigenous-led solutions.
As Steven Nitah, N4J’s Canada Managing Director and former Chief of the ŁuTsël K’e Dene Nation, said in the plan:
“Indigenous Conservation is about returning to traditional values that centre on the relationships with the land and each other.”
We would like to extend sincere appreciation to the leadership behind this work: Dave McKay, President and CEO, Jacynthe Côté, Chair of the Board, Phil Fontaine, Special Advisor, and Chinyere Eni, Head of RBC Origins. Their leadership has helped shape a more intentional role for Canada’s largest financial institution in advancing economic reconciliation and Indigenous inclusion. We are incredibly grateful to our primary contacts at RBC, including Julia Bak and Thea Silver whose guidance and support have been vital to the growth and success of First 30×30 Canada. Thanks to RBC’s leadership and early investment, we are making bold strides toward a future where climate action and economic reconciliation go hand in hand. As we continue walking this shared path, we remain committed to amplifying Indigenous voices and enabling community-led conservation for generations to come.
Together, we are proving that relationships rooted in trust, vision, and action can shape a future where people and the planet thrive.
